How to Measure for Blinds

Choose inside or outside mount first, then follow the three steps below. Record every measurement to the nearest 1/8 inch and use a steel tape measure.

Inside Mount

The blind sits within the window opening for a clean, built-in look. Confirm that the opening is deep and square enough for the selected product.

Step 1

Measure width

Measure the opening at the top, middle, and bottom. Use the narrowest of the three measurements.

Step 2

Measure height

Measure on the left, center, and right. Use the tallest of the three measurements.

Step 3

Enter exact opening size

Enter the width and height you measured to the nearest 1/8 inch. Do not make your own deduction.

Important

For custom inside-mount blinds, AiryBlinds makes the finished blind approximately 0.4 inch narrower than the width you enter so it can operate freely. You must enter the exact narrowest opening width and must not subtract this allowance yourself.

Outside Mount

The blind covers the opening and mounts to the wall or trim. Extra overlap improves privacy and light control.

Step 1

Plan the width

Add 1 to 3 inches of overlap on each side of the opening, then measure the full finished width you want.

Step 2

Plan the height

Allow at least 7/8 inch of flat mounting space above the opening, then measure to where the blind should finish.

Step 3

Enter finished size

Enter the exact total width and height you want the blind to cover. AiryBlinds does not make an automatic outside-mount deduction.

Check clearance

Confirm that handles, locks, trim, and other obstructions will not prevent the blind from hanging and operating correctly.
